[:ja]No.229: 夜の地球1でもご紹介した、NASAが5年ぶりに更新した夜の地球「ブラックマーブル」の画像ですが、夜のヨーロッパです。
ヨーロッパにはアジアのようなネオンをぎらつかせる文化はあまりありませんが、こうして見ると、大陸では、イタリア北部とオランダ、ベルギーの明るさが顕著です。もちろんロンドン、パリ、マドリードなどの大都市も明るいですが、それ以上に明るくなっています。
夜の地球を研究することで、人間活動が顕著にわかります。特に、都市が拡大している様子や背景、エネルギー使用量の推定など、様々な分野で応用されています。

As introduuced in No.229: Night Earth 1, NASA released the first new night Earth map “Black Marble” in 5 years, and this is the Europe at night.
Unlike Asia Europe has no neon-glittering culture, but certain locations around northern Italy, Netherlands and Belgium are especially bright. Mega cities such as London, Paris and Madrid are luminous, as always.
The nighttime view of the Earth provides researchers with a unique perspective of human activities. By studying Earth at night, researchers can investigate how and why cities expand, monitor light intensity to estimate energy use and economic activity.
