[:ja]トマ・ペスケ宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したイタリアの首都、ローマです。昔のローマの大国さを表した「ローマは一日にして成らず」という諺もある通り、270万人を擁するイタリア最大の都市であると同時に、西洋文明圏を代表する都市のひとつであり、カトリック教会の中枢でもあります。
また、ローマ市に囲まれるようにローマ教皇の居住するバチカン市国があります。そこは全世界のカトリック教徒にとっての中心地で、現在は外国であるが歴史・宗教・文化的にはローマ市地域と密接な関わりがあります。テベレ川が東方に曲がっている地点の西側に、サン・ピエトロ大聖堂と広場が確認できます。

Astronaut Thomas Pesquet captured from ISS Rome, the capital of Italy. As is said “Rome wasn’t built in a day”, Rome has 2.7 million population and is the larget city in Italy.
Enclosed in Rome lies Vatican City, the smallest state in the world by both area and population (1,000). In the image where Tiber River turns to the east, Saint Peter’s Basilica and Square can be recognized.
