バイカル湖は、シベリアのブリヤート共和国とイルクーツク州・チタ州に挟まれた三日月型の湖です。湖水面積は31,494km2で、カスピ海（塩湖）や急速に面積を縮小しているアラル海を除くとアジア最大、最大水深は1,642mと世界で最も深い湖です。また、世界で最も古い古代湖でもあります。
