[:ja]JAXAの地球観測衛星だいちが撮影した中国四川省の九寨溝(きゅうさいこう)です。8月8日にマグニチュード7.0の大地震が発生、少なくとも19人が死亡、247人が負傷、3万人以上の観光客が避難したと伝えられています。

九寨溝はエメラルドグリーンの湖水や滝、沼などが連なった景勝地です。谷間に9つのチベット族の寨(村落)があることに由来して九寨溝と呼ばれています。広大な原生林の中には、100以上の湖沼や瀑布が点在し、ガラスのような透明度の高いエメラルドグリーンの湖「五花海」など、美しい景観が作り出されています。ジャイアントパンダの生息地で、絶滅の危機に瀕した動植物や鳥類の楽園でもあり、観光地としても人々を魅了しており、1992年に世界遺産に登録されました。

Japanese JAXA’s ALOS satellite captured beautiful Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan Province, China. On Aug. 8, powerful M7.0 earthquake hit the area, killing at least 19, injuring 247 and more than 30,000 tourists were reported to have evacuated.

Jiuzhaigou (“Nine Village”) Valley, located on the karst plains in the Minshan Mountains to the north of Sichuan Province in China, taking its name from the nine Tibetan communities living down in the valley, is a scenic area known for its many multi-level waterfalls, colorful lakes, and snow-capped peaks. Jiuzhaigou Valley was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1992 and a World Biosphere Reserve in 1997.
