[:ja]NASAの地球観測衛星Suomi NPPが撮影したグリーンランド西部の山火事です。

氷雪に覆われるグリーンランドでも山火事があることは以前から知られていましたが、人工衛星による観測の結果、2017年は過去最多の山火事を観測しています。

山火事の原因は特定されていませんが、科学者の分析によると、この山火事は泥炭が燃えているとの指摘がされています。地球温暖化が進行する中、夏のグリーンランドの氷床の融解が進み、地表の色が濃くなったために、融解の速度がさらに速まるという悪循環に入ると、地表の泥炭が何らかの原因で燃える可能性が高まると考えられています。

NASA’ Suomi NPP satellite captured wildfire in west Greenland.

While it is not unprecedented for satellites to observe fire activity in Greenland, a preliminary analysis by scientists suggests that satellite has detected far more fire activity in Greenland in 2017 than it did during any other year. The blaze appears to be burning through peat.

Scientists point out that warming Arctic temperatures and a darkening surface of the Greenland ice sheet are causing so much summer melting that it is now the dominant factor in Greenland’s contribution to sea level rise. Warmer temps combined with summer melting to reveal tundra that can burn equals the ability to have wildfires that most probably began with a lightning strike.
