島国のフィリピンは、海を挟んで日本、台湾、マレーシア、インドネシア、中国、ベトナムと対しています。国名のフィリピンは16世紀のスペイン皇太子フェリペからちなんでいます。2016年5月9日の大統領選挙で南部ミンダナオ島ダバオ市のドゥテルテ市長（当時）が当選、違法薬物・犯罪・汚職対策，ミンダナオ和平を重要課題に掲げて政権運営を進めています。
フィリピンは、最近人口1億人を超え、平均年齢が24歳と若く、人口ボーナスが2045年まで続く見込みです。2016年の経済成長率は6.9%と、ASEANの中でも注目されています。

ちなみに油井宇宙飛行士のツイッターでは、2年前の終戦記念日に太平洋戦争で祖父がフィリピンで亡くなられたことに言及されていました。

The Philippines is a sovereign island country in Southeast Asia situated in the western Pacific Ocean, and shares maritime borders with Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, China and Vietnam. In 2016 Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte of PDP–Laban won the presidential election, and since then the Duterte administration launched an intensified anti-drug campaign.
The Philippines has just over 100 million population with average age of approximately 24, exhibiting demographic bonus continuing until 2045. 2016 GDP growth recorded 6.9% which is one of the highest figures in ASEAN.
