[:ja]トマ・ペスケ宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したフランスの海外領土であるニューカレドニアです。
ニューカレドニアはリゾート地として有名ですが、ニッケルを産出する鉱業の島で、世界のニッケル資源の1/4を有しています。日欧米などの企業が採掘権を買っており、これらの採掘はほとんど露天掘りで行われています。また、1985年以降、メラネシア系先住民カナックによる激しい独立運動が行われ、現在では沈静化しましたが一時は暴動や内戦に近い状態を呈していました。

Astronaut Thomas Pesquet captured from ISS New Caledonia, a special collectivity of France in Melanesia.
While New Caledonia is famous for resort destination, the island contains about 25% of the world’s nickel resources. Also since 1985, conflicts between French government actions and the Kanak independence movement saw periods of serious violence and disorder which is no longer active as it used to be.
New Caledonia was introduced in No.195: New Caledonia.
