[:ja]大西卓哉宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したギリシャのテッサロニキです。自治体の人口は32万人ですが、大都市圏では100万人を超え、同国では首都アテネに次ぐ2番目に大きな都市です。
テッサロニキは紀元前315年に創建され、以来2300年の歴史がある都市で、ローマ時代には重要な大都市でした。東ローマ帝国時代にはコンスタンティノープルと並びビザンティンに君臨した都市でした。テッサロニキ港はギリシャや南東ヨーロッパの後背地にとっては重要な役割を果たしています。ギリシャにおいて有名な行事が行われたり、様々な時代の遺構が残されていることから文化的な首都であると考えられています。直近では、財政難から、昨年末にテッサロニキ港の持分をドイツの投資家に売却したとのニュースがありました。

Thessaloniki’s nickname is η Συμπρωτεύουσα (Symprotévousa), literally “the co-capital”, a reference to its historical status as the “co-reigning” city of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, alongside Constantinople. Thessaloniki is a major transportation hub for Greece and southeastern Europe, notably through the Port of Thessaloniki. The city is renowned for its festivals, events and vibrant cultural life in general, and is considered to be Greece’s cultural capital. On Dec. 28, 2017, Greece’s asset liquidation agency has announced the sale of its 67% stake in Thessaloniki Port to German investors.
