[:ja]大西卓哉宇宙飛行士がISSのキューポラから地球を見る様子です。興味深いのは、大西さんは、自分がISSで撮った地球の写真がJAXAに紹介される時、上下反転されることが多いと言っていますが、それが一般の方にとっては見やすいということです。
通常は「見上げる」より「見下ろす」方が楽ということですが、宇宙空間に行くと基準系が変わるので、そのギャップが存在するということです。以下、大西さんのコメントです。
一瞬わからなかったのは、私が撮った写真が上下逆さまになっていたからです。キューポラから撮った写真は普通地球が上に写っています。それが地球が下に来るように、反転されています。いつもJAXA広報の担当者に写真を送ると、それが地上で公開されるときには上下反転されて公開されます。ちょっと興味深いなと思いました。
私はこの上下反転されると、何だか居心地が悪いのです。ところが、地上の方にとっては元の構図の方が居心地が悪いのでしょう。
私たちがキューポラから地球を眺めるとき、通常は頭からキューポラに入っていくので、必然的に地球を見上げる格好になります。だから地球が上に写っている方がしっくりくるのです。地上の方は、反対に宇宙を見上げていますからね。私たちはお互いに見上げている状態というわけです。
人間というのは、どうしても自分の主観に合わせてものを見るのだなと、このエピソードで改めて感じました。

Astronaut Takuya Onishi looks out at the Earth from Cupola. Interesting thing is, Onishi commented that when the images he took at ISS are introduced to the public via JAXA all the photos are turned upside down.
For most people “looking down” at something is more comfortable than “looking up”. In space, or the real situation at ISS it is just the opposite and Onishi commented that it is closer to say astronauts “look up” at the Earth from Cupola.
There is no up or down in space but astronauts express the way they look at Earth and it is very interesting.
