This is Astronaut Donald Pettit’s stunning photo and movie clip “From Above”.
Donald Roy Pettit is an American chemical engineer and a NASA astronaut who got onboard ISS in 2002/2003 as a mission specialist. Pettit is also a professional photographer and during Expedition 6 in 2002/2003, Pettit used spare parts found throughout the Station to construct a barn door tracker; the device compensates for the movement of the ISS relative to the Earth’s surface, permitting sharper high resolution images of city lights at night from the orbiting space station.
Pettit comments he is favorite subject is the Earth at night, as follows.
“Aurora is just amazingly beautiful. It’s this glowing upper part of the atmosphere that crawls around like amoebas in the sky,”
“And cities at night. The way human beings sprinkle their light bulbs around is a fascinating statement on how we as human beings define our urban areas.”
“There’s a lot of things you can learn about human beings in the way that they sprinkle their lights out at night.”
