シドニーは、オーストラリア最大の人口500万を有し、南半球を代表する世界都市及び金融センターです。海に臨むオペラハウスなどが著名で、世界で最も美しいといわれる都市の一つです。シドニーの市街地はポート・ジャクソン湾南岸を起源とし、主たる商工業地区もこの地域一帯に広がっています。市街地の大部分は丘陵上に発達し、特に湾に面した地域では、短く急な坂道が多いです。
