ダーウィンは、ティモール海に面したオーストラリア準州ノーザンテリトリーの州都で、人口は15万人弱です。75の民族、人口の約4分の1がアボリジニなどの原住民という非常に多文化的な都市です。1600年代、オランダ人がオーストラリア北岸に達し、初めて地図を作りましたが、その名残で、現在でもアーネムランド、グルートアイランド島などオランダ語の地名が残っています。

Astronaut Randy Bresnik captured from ISS Darwin, Australia.
Situated on the Timor Sea, Darwin is the 145K capital city of the Northern Territory of Australia. The Dutch visited Australia’s northern coastline in the 1600s and landed on the Tiwi Islands only to be repelled by the Tiwi peoples. The Dutch created the first European maps of the area. This accounts for the Dutch names in the area.
