スコットランドはグレートブリテン島の北部3分の1を占め、本島と別に790以上の島嶼部から構成されます。首都のエディンバラは第2の都市であり、最大の都市であるグラスゴーは、人口の40%が集中しています。
スコットランドはヨーロッパ最古の歴史をもつ王国です。その歴史は10,000年前、デヴォンシャー氷期の終わりごろに人類が初めて移住してきた時期に始まります。また、以前は、スコットランドは高度な文明の存在しない周縁地域であり、地中海発祥の文化がゆっくりと浸透していったと考えられていましたが、相次ぐ考古学的発見から、独自の高度な文化をもっていたことが明らかになりました。
