京都は歴史的には794年に日本の首都に定められた都城・平安京で、当時は日本の政治・文化の中心地でした。画像からもわかりますが、平安京は中国の風水に適う地(「四神相応の地」)として撰地されたとの伝えがあり、南に開け、他の三方を山に囲まれ、東に鴨川が、西に桂川が蛇行しながら南へと流れています。

Kyoto is a city located in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. Formerly the Imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years, it is now a major part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area. During the 8th century, when powerful Buddhist clergy became involved in the affairs of the Imperial government, Emperor Kanmu chose to relocate the capital in order to distance it from the clerical establishment in Nara.
