アンマンはヨルダンの首都で、全人口の約4割にあたる約4百万人が住んでいます。街はもともと7つの丘（jabel（ジャバル））の上に建設されましたが、現在では周囲の他の丘の上にまで拡大し、現在のアンマンは19の丘にまたがっています。紀元前17世紀以来の古い都市で、古代にはフィラデルフィアと呼ばれ繁栄しました。20世紀初頭にトランスヨルダンの首都となり発達し、パレスチナ戦争後急激に規模を拡大しました。

Amman has 4 million population which is about 40% of the entire nation and is considered to be among the most liberal and westernized Arab cities. The Greeks founded Amman which was then called Philadelphia. It was initially built on 7 hills but now spans over 19 hills combining 27 districts. Jordan is strategically located at the crossroads of Asia, Africa and Europe.
