サンクトペテルブルクはバルト海に面する港町で、1917年までロシア帝国の首都、ソビエト連邦時代はレニングラードと呼ばれました。東方問題の最前線として開発された世界都市で、100万都市としては世界で最も北に位置しています。市中心部に運河が縦横に巡る美しい街並みを有することから、「北のヴェネツィア」と称されることもあります。世界遺産のエルミタージュ美術館は、1764年にエカチェリーナ2世がドイツから美術品を買い取ったのがはじまりです。

Saint Petersburg is an important port city on the Baltic Sea, and was the capital of Imperial Russia until 1917. The historic center and monuments constitute a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Saint Petersburg is home to the Hermitage, one of the largest art museums in the world, which was founded in 1764 when Empress Catherine the Great acquired an impressive collection of paintings from the Berlin merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky.
