リビアはアフリカ大陸の北部サハラ砂漠に位置し、国土の約90%が砂漠ですが、110万人を擁する港町の首都トリポリは、地中海に面するステップ/砂漠地帯にあります。同国最大のトリポリ港を擁し、商業・製造業の中心となっています。紀元前7世紀にカルタゴによって建設されたフェニキア人の植民都市「オエア」「サブラタ」「レプティス」の3つを総称して、ギリシア語で「3つの都市」を意味する Tripolis が由来です。

Libya is a predominantly desert country, 90% of which is covered in desert. Tripoli the capital city with 1.1 million population is at the northern edge of the continent, facing the Mediterranean Sea. The city includes the port of Tripoli and the country’s largest commercial and manufacturing centre. Tripoli is a Greek name that means “Three Cities”, Oea, Sabratha and Leptis, and was introduced in Western European languages through the Italian Tripoli.
