[:ja]アントン・シュカプレロフ宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したカザフスタンの首都アスタナです。1997年にアルマトイから遷都されました。画像からは、5月ですが周辺の川や湖が凍っている様子がわかります。

アスタナは人口100万人超でアルマトイに次ぐ同国第2の都市です。1998年のカザフスタン政府主催の国際コンペで1位に選ばれた日本の建築家・黒川紀章の都市計画案に基づき開発が続けられています。シベリア寒気団の直撃により最低気温が-50度近くになることもある世界で最も冬の寒さが厳しい首都とも言われます。夏は時に40度近くに達することもあり、年較差は90度近い大陸性気候です。

Astana with 1 million population is the second largest city in Kazakhstan, behind Almaty. Modern Astana is a planned city designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa.

Astana has an extreme continental climate with warm summers and very cold, dry winters, and the city is one of the coldest capital cities in the world. Summer temperatures occasionally reach 40°C while it can reach −50°C in winter, with the range of 90°C throughout the year.
