[:ja]オレグ・アルテミエフ宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したイランのマハール湖です。
マハール湖はイランの大都市シラーズの南東27kmにある季節変動する塩湖です。雨季には、シラーズを通る川から湖まで水が運ばれます。湖の赤色は赤潮によるもので、カリウムや塩の水溶液でバクテリアや藻が増殖します。夏になると、湖の水が蒸発し、このようなピンク色に変色します。

Maharloo Lake is a seasonal salt lake in the highlands 27km southeast of Shiraz, the lake salt is rich in potassium and other salts. Rudkhane-ye-Khoshk, a seasonal river flowing through the city of Shiraz, brings most of the flood water to the lake bed during intensive precipitation events. The growth of bacteria and particularly seaweeds come to change the color of the water which is rich in potassium and salts. By mid-summer and due to high evaporation rates and salt concentrations, the lake water turns pinkish red as a result of the red tide within the lake.
