[:ja]ランディ・ブレズニク宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した、バイエルン王ルートヴィヒ2世によって建築されたドイツ南部バイエルン州のノイシュバンシュタイン城です。王がノイシュヴァンシュタイン城に居住した期間は、わずか172日間でした。
ルートヴィヒ2世は中世騎士道への憧れを強く抱いた人物で、ヴァルトブルク城やヴェルサイユ宮殿を目にし、自分の中世への憧れを具現化するロマンティックな城を造ろうと決意しました。ノイシュバンシュタイン城のみならず他の城の建設費用も王室費から支出されていましたが、プロイセンに対し普墺戦争の損害賠償を未だ抱えていたバイエルン政府はこれに危機感を募らせ、最終的に首相ルッツらは、ルートヴィヒ2世を形ばかりの精神病鑑定にかけ、統治不能としてベルク城に軟禁しました。その翌日、王は主治医とシュタルンベルク湖畔を散歩中に謎の死を遂げました。ルートヴィヒ2世のロマンティック趣味のためだけに建設されたもので、実用性は無視された設計になっており、居住、政務、軍事施設としても不向きな城です。

Astronaut Randy Bresnik captured from ISS Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria, Germany. The castle was constructed by Ludwig II who ended up living in the palace for only 172 days.
Neuschwanstein embodies both the contemporaneous architectural fashion known as castle romanticism, and Ludwig II’s immoderate enthusiasm for the operas of Richard Wagner. he king’s wishes and demands expanded during the construction of Neuschwanstein, and so did the expenses. Due to the backlash against the increased debt, Bavarian government decided to depose the king, followed by mysterious death in the shallow shore water of Lake Starnberg near Berg Castle.
