マルセイユは、紀元前600年にギリシアのフォカイア人が築いた植民都市「マッシリア」にはじまるフランス最古の都市で、2000年以上も商業都市として繁栄してきました。地中海沿岸の天然の良港に恵まれるマルセイユは貿易の中心地として発展し、現在も商都として繁栄しています。フランスの他の都市とは異なる独自の文化を形成しており、周辺のプロヴァンス地域と共に、2013年の欧州文化首都に選ばれました。

Known to the ancient Greeks and Romans as Massalia 600B.C., Marseille has been one of the most important trading centers in the region and the main commercial port of the country for more than 2000 years. Marseille has its own unique culture and is proud of its differences from the rest of France. Today it is a regional center for culture and entertainment with an important opera house, historical and maritime museums, five art galleries and numerous cinemas, clubs, bars and restaurants. The city was selected as the European Capital of Culture in 2013.
