[Earthview Wonders] No.586: Southern African Slash-and-Burn🇿🇦
Astronaut Alex Gerst captured from ISS the burning of sugarcane at harvesting in South Africa.

Sugarcane is an important export crop, and South Africa is the world’s tenth largest sugar producer. The cane is harvested over the period April to December each year. In the traditional Slash-and-burn method, treetop and leaves are first burnt and the stem or cane is taken down. The photo shows this smoke before harvesting. This smoke in the traditional method always raises air pollution and environmental discussion.
The local scenery on the ground is as follows.
