[:ja]NASAの地球観測衛星Terraが撮影したレソトの冬です。今、南半球は冬で、アフリカ南部の小国レソトも8月9,10日に国全般に5~30cmの降雪がありました。
レソト王国は、周囲を南アフリカ共和国に囲まれた世界最南の内陸国で、1966年にイギリスから独立しました。南アフリカ共和国を経由しないと行き来できない地域があり、「アフリカのスイス」ともいわれており、非同盟中立を宣言しています。全土がドラケンスバーグ山脈の山中に位置するため、平地が一切なく、全土の標高が1400mを超えます。レソトの経済は、農業と南アフリカ共和国向けの繊維製品を中心とした輸出、南アフリカ共和国への出稼ぎで支えられています。

NASA’s Terra satellite captured the winter of Lesotho. It is winter in the southern hemisphere, and a winter weather front dropped 5-30cm of snow on most of the country on Aug. 9 and 10.
Lesotho is an enclaved country in southern Africa which declared independence from the U.K. in 1966. It is the only independent state in the world that lies entirely above 1,000m in elevation which keeps the country remain cooler throughout the year than other regions at the same latitude. The economy of Lesotho is based on agriculture, livestock, manufacturing and mining, and depends heavily on inflows of workers’ remittances and receipts from the Southern African Customs Union (SACU).
