[:ja]アレックス・ゲルスト宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したギリシャのミコノス島です。
ミコノス島はエーゲ海中部・キクラデス諸島に属するギリシャ領の島で、地質は主に花崗岩で水源は少なく、海水の淡水化によって生活用水の需要に応えています。紀元前11世紀初頭よりイオニア人が住みついたとされいますが、フテリア海岸には紀元前3000年前後の新石器時代のカレスの遺跡も発見されたとも伝えられています。ギリシア神話ではゼウスとギガースの戦いの地として知られ、島の名はアポロンの孫・ミコノスの名より取られたとされます。

Mykonos is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea, lying between Tinos, Syros, Paros and Naxos. Tourism is a major industry and Mykonos is well known for its vibrant nightlife. Herodotus mentions Carians as the original inhabitants of the island. Ionians from Athens seem to have followed next in the early 11th century BC.
