[:ja]ドリュー・フューステル宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したアメリカのグランドキャニオンです。
グランド・キャニオンはアメリカ・アリゾナ州北部にある峡谷で、コロラド高原が長年のコロラド川による浸食作用で削り出された地形です。先カンブリア時代からペルム紀までの地層の重なりが好露出しており、肉眼で観察が可能です。グランド・キャニオンの断崖は平均の深さ約1200m（最深地点は1800m）、長さ446km、幅6~29kmに及びます。グランドキャニオンの起源は今から7000万年前、この一帯の広い地域がカイバブ・アップリフトとよばれる地殻変動により隆起したことに始まります。約4000万年前、コロラド川による浸食が始まる。峡谷は500万年前にほぼその全容を現し、現在見られるような峡谷になったのは、約200万年前です。そして今もなお、浸食は続いており、最古でおよそ20億年前の原始生命誕生時の地層を浸食しています。

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in Arizona, United States. The Grand Canyon is 446km long, up to 29km wide and attains a depth of over 1,857m. Nearly 2 billion years of Earth’s geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. Several recent studies support the hypothesis that the Colorado River established its course through the area about 5 to 6 million years ago.
