[:ja]リッキー・アーノルド宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した、太平洋と大西洋をつなぐパナマ運河です。
パナマ運河は、パナマ地峡を開削して太平洋とカリブ海を結んでいる閘門式運河で、規模は全長約80km、最小幅91m、最大幅200m、最浅部12.5mです。スエズ運河を拓いたフェルディナン・ド・レセップスの手で開発に着手したものの、難工事とマラリアの蔓延により放棄。その後パナマ運河地帯としてアメリカ合衆国によって建設が進められ、10年の歳月をかけて1914年に開通しました。国際運河であり、船籍・軍民を問わず通行が保証されています。長らくアメリカによる管理が続きましたが、1999年12月31日正午にパナマに完全返還されました。

The Panama Canal is an artificial 82km waterway (91-200m wide) in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a conduit for maritime trade. France began work on the canal in 1881, but stopped due to engineering problems and a high worker mortality rate. The United States took over the project in 1904 and opened the canal on August 15, 1914. After a period of joint American–Panamanian control, in 1999, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government. It is now managed and operated by the government-owned Panama Canal Authority.
