ブルンジは、東アフリカの内陸に位置し、ルワンダ、コンゴ民主共和国、タンザニアと国境を接しています。多数派のフツと少数派のツチの間で対立があり、1962年の独立以降、度々衝突し1993年には内戦にまで発展しています。長い内戦と経済制裁によって、経済は壊滅状態に陥っており、世界最貧国の1つです。主要産業は農業で、中でもコーヒー豆の生産は突出しており、就業人口の9割、全人口の55％がコーヒー豆（アラビカ種）の栽培で生計を立てています。

Burundi is a landlocked country in the African Great Lakes region of East Africa. Burundi remains an overwhelmingly rural society, with just 13% of the population living in urban areas in 2013. Roughly 85% of the population are of Hutu ethnic origin, 15% are Tutsi, and fewer than 1% are indigenous Twa. Bouts of ethnic cleansing and ultimately two civil wars and genocides during the 1970s and again in the 1990s between the Hutu and Tutsi peoples left the country undeveloped and its population as one of the world’s poorest.
