イタリアのポー平原西部（ポー川上流）にはトリノやミラノなど大工業地帯があります。Agenzia europea dell’ambiente（欧州環境庁）のヨーロッパの大気に関する最新の報告書では、ポー平原の大気は改善の傾向が見られるにもかかわらず、ポーランド最大の工業地帯とならんでヨーロッパで最悪の大気汚染です。ミラノでは大気中に放射されるＰＭ10の85%は交通渋滞とCエリアに集中し、大気中に放出されるＰＭ10の70%以上が自動車やディーゼルトラック、2ストロークガソリンエンジン搭載のミニバイクが原因であると見積もられています。

Astronaut Alex Gerst captured from ISS the smog of Po Valley, the northern Italy.
This view shows the Po River valley under a thick layer of industrial air pollution. The polluted air is effectively trapped by the high walls of the Alps and Appenine Hills, which rise, amphitheater-like, around the valley. As the plume exits the valley it flows eastward into the Adriatic Sea, which from space often appears almost as polluted as the Po Valley itself.
