[:ja]リッキー・アーノルド宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した中東のペルシャ湾、アラビア湾です。
ペルシア湾/アラビア湾は、イラン、イラク、クウェート、サウジアラビア、バーレーン、カタール、アラブ首長国連邦、オマーンに囲まれた細長い形状の湾です。平均水深100メートル、最大170メートルを浅い。ホルムズ海峡を通じ、オマーン湾そしてアラビア海へと繋がっています。20世紀初頭までは、真珠採集などが盛んでしたが、20世紀前半にこの地域で石油が発見されました。20世紀後半には、油田開発が活発に行われ、湾内には多くの油井が存在します。油田地帯であり、また、石油輸送のための重要な水路であるため、戦略的重要性から国際政治の係争地となりやすくなっています。ちなみに、湾内には反時計回りのゆっくりした海流があります。

The Persian Gulf or Arabian Gulf is a mediterranean sea in Western Asia. The body of water is an extension of the Indian Ocean through the Strait of Hormuz and lies between Iran to the northeast and the Arabian Peninsula to the southwest. The gulf has many fishing grounds, extensive reefs (mostly rocky, but also coral), and abundant pearl oysters, but its ecology has been damaged by industrialization and oil spills. The Persian Gulf and its coastal areas are the world’s largest single source of crude oil,[citation needed] and related industries dominate the region.
