[:ja]リッキー・アーノルド宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した、アフリカ最高峰、5,895mのタンザニアのキリマンジャロ山です。
キリマンジャロはアフリカ大地溝帯の東リフト・バレーに位置する、東西約50km、南北30kmの大型の成層火山です。山体中央にあるる最高峰のキボ峰、直径2.5kmのカルデラ、その内側の直径900m火口と、中心の直径200mのAsh pitと呼ばれる小火口で構成されています。この山の南麓に住むチャガ人は勤勉な農民として知られ、1900年ごろからコーヒーの栽培を開始。キリマンジャロから灌漑水路を引くことで安定した生産を可能にし、1932年には協同組合「キリマンジャロ原住民共同組合連合会」を組織して品質の維持に努めた結果、南麓で栽培されるコーヒーはコーヒー豆の銘柄「キリマンジャロ」としてブランド化し、高い評価を得るようになりました。

Astronaut Ricky Arnold captured from ISS the Mount Kilimanjaro of Tanzania, the highest peak in Africa at 5,895m.
Mt. Kilimanjaro with its three volcanic cones, “Kibo” (5,895m), “Mawenzi”, and “Shira”, is a dormant volcano in Tanzania which is the highest mountain in Africa. The mountain has been the subject of many scientific studies because of its shrinking glaciers and disappearing ice fields. In the foothill area maize, beans, and sunflowers are cultivated, and between 1,000-1,800m, coffee also appears as part of the “Chagga home gardens” agroforestry. The Tanzanian coffee board works continuously on making a better brand name for the Tanzanian coffee, and in Japan, Tanzanian coffee has managed to maintain a brand called “Kilimanjaro coffee”.
