[:ja]セルゲイ・リャザンスキー宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影したイエメン第2の都市、人口80万人のアデンです。
アデンは古くから欧州とインドを結ぶ通商の要衝として注目され、Minaeans、Himyarite Kingdom（前110年-520年頃）、アクスム王国、サーサーン朝が知られており、アッバース朝（750年-1258年）の時代にイスラムが伝来しています。中心はアデン半島で標高551mの黒い切り立った火成岩の岩山（シャムシャーン山）を取り巻くようにして街並みが広がっています。古くは紅海・インド洋航行の要衝として通過する船から航行料を徴収し、20世紀まで乳香・石炭・木炭・塩・コーヒー・小麦の生産・積出し基地と国内生活物資の輸入基地でした。近年ガス田が発見されたことから液化天然ガスの輸出基地となりました。

Astronaut Sergey Ryazansky captured from ISS Aden, Yemen.
Aden is a port city and the temporary capital of Yemen, located by the eastern approach to the Red Sea (the Gulf of Aden). Its population is approximately 800,000 people. Aden’s natural harbour lies in the crater of a dormant volcano, which now forms a peninsula joined to the mainland by a low isthmus. This harbour, Front Bay, was first used by the ancient Kingdom of Awsan between the 5th and 7th centuries BC. The modern harbour is on the other side of the peninsula. Aden gives its name to the Gulf of Aden.
