[:ja]NASAの地球観測衛星Landsat 8が撮影したフランスのソンム川です。

ソンムはケルト語で”静けさ”を意味し、川はソンム県の語源となっていますが、1916年7月1日から同11月19日までフランス北部・ピカルディ地方を流れるソンム河畔の戦線において展開されたソンムの戦いは、第一次世界大戦における最大の会戦でした。連合国側のイギリス軍・フランス軍が同盟国側のドイツ軍に対する大攻勢として開始し、最終的に両軍合わせて100万人以上の損害を出したが、連合国軍はわずかな土地を獲得したにとどまり、ドイツ側は後退を最少におさえました。

NASA’s Landsat 8 satellite captured Somme River, France.

While the name “Somme” comes from a Celtic word meaning “tranquility,” the area around this river turned out to be the location of one of the bloodiest battles in human history with over 1 million casualties. The Battle of the Somme was a battle of the First World War fought by the armies of the British Empire and French Third Republic against the German Empire. It took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916 on both sides of the upper reaches of the River Somme in France. The battle was intended to hasten a victory for the Allies and was the largest battle of the First World War on the Western Front.
