アマゾン熱帯雨林の火事では、アマゾンが生成する酸素の量に様々な意見が出されており、「アマゾンは地球の酸素の20%を生産」は誤りとする記事もあります。

一方、生物多様性の観点からは、極めて重要な役割を担っています。アマゾン川は長年生態的条件や気象的条件が比較的安定していたため、セルバと呼ばれる熱帯雨林や水中の世界でも、豊かで多様性に富んだ動植物が数多く見られます。アマゾン川流域には、約250種類の哺乳類、約1,800種類の鳥類、特に昆虫全体に至っては、100万種以上が生息していると推測されています。
