東ティモールは1999年8月30日に国連の主導で独立についての住民投票を実施し、インドネシアの占領から2002年5月20日独立した、21世紀最初の独立国です。島国であり、小スンダ列島にあるティモール島の東半分とアタウロ島、ジャコ島、飛地オエクシで構成されています。石油・天然ガスによる収入はGDPの8割に達しており、IMFは東ティモールの経済を「世界で最も石油収入に依存した経済」と評しています。石油以外の主要産業は農業で、米やトウモロコシ、コーヒー豆などが生産されています。

East Timor or Timor-Leste comprises the eastern half of the island of Timor, the nearby islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern side of the island surrounded by Indonesian West Timor. After the colonization by Portugal and invasion by Indonesia, East Timor became the first new sovereign state of the 21st century in 2002. East Timor has a market economy that used to depend upon exports of a few commodities such as coffee, marble, petroleum, and sandalwood. East Timor now has revenue from offshore oil and gas reserves, and the country is labelled by the IMF as the “most oil-dependent economy in the world”.
