[:ja]ルカ・パルミタノ宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した米ハワイ島、ビッグアイランドです。
人口は約19万人と、ハワイ州の島としてはオアフ島に次ぐ大きさです。また、同島東岸の都市・ヒロは、日系移民によって開発された都市である。ヒロは、歴史的に津波によって数度壊滅的被害を受けた経験から、太平洋津波博物館が設置されており、津波に関する研究が行われています。ハワイ島内の南西にある町キャプテン・クック（英語版）は、キャプテン・クックことジェームズ・クックがハワイの原住民に殺害された場所であり、ケアラケクア湾にはその記念碑がありまｓ。また、ハワイ王朝を統一したカメハメハ大王の出身地も島内にあり、ホノルルのイオラニ宮殿前にあるのと同様の銅像が、同島東岸の都市ヒロと、同島北端のハヴィ（カメハメハ大王の出生地）に各1体ずつあります。

Hawaii is the largest island located in the U.S. state of Hawaii. The island has 63% of the Hawaiian archipelago’s combined landmass. Sugarcane was the backbone of the island of Hawaii’s economy for more than a century which closed in 1995. Most of the island’s economy is now based on tourism, centered primarily in resort areas on the western coast of the island in the North Kona and South Kohala districts. More recently, Hawaii Island has become a focus for sustainable tourism. Diversified agriculture is also a growing sector of the economy.
