アゼルバイジャンは南コーカサスに位置し、東はカスピ海に面しています。紛争の歴史を経て、アルメニア人が多数居住する西部のナゴルノ・カラバフ地方は、自治州となっています。バクー油田など豊富な天然資源があり、カスピ海では油田のほかにガス田も生産を始めており、ソ連崩壊やアルメニアとの紛争で落ち込んだ経済を支えています。欧米の直接投資と原油高に伴う多額の収入が国内の経済を急速な勢いで成長させていますが、一方で激しいインフレと失業率に悩まされている。また、環境汚染も深刻です。

Azerbaijan is in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia, and is bounded by the Caspian Sea to the east. With difficult historical background, the Armenian majority of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh is an autonomous region of the country today. Two-thirds of Azerbaijan is rich in oil and natural gas and the country has numerous pipelines. The history of the oil industry of Azerbaijan dates back to the ancient period.
