ハイチは27,750km2の小さな島に1千万人が暮らし、カリブ海では最も人口密度が高い国です。また、ハイチは西半球で最も貧しい国と言われており、国民の80%は劣悪な貧困状態に置かれています。伝統的農法に頼った結果、過耕作、土地の荒廃なども影響して、農業生産性は極めて低く、食料自給率は45%、米の自給率は30%未満となっています。2010年に起きたハイチ大地震の影響も続いています。

Haiti is 27,750km2 in size and has an estimated 10 million people, making it the most populous country in the Caribbean Community. Despite having a viable tourist industry, Haiti is one of the world’s poorest countries with poverty, corruption, poor infrastructure, lack of health care and lack of education cited as the main sources. The economy receded due to the 2010 earthquake and subsequent outbreak of Cholera.
