サンディエゴはアメリカ西海岸有数の世界都市であり、米国で8番目に大きい都市です。年間を通じて過ごしやすい温暖気候、自然の豊かな地形、それらを活かしたレジャースポット、大都市としての利便性などの点に恵まれています。1542年、ポルトガル生まれのスペインの探検家のフアン・ロドリゲス・カブリージョが、ヨーロッパ人として初めてサンディエゴに足を踏み入れたとされています。1602年、植民地開拓に来たスペイン人のセバスティアン・ビスカイノは、同年11月12日の「サン・ディエゴ・デ・アルカラ」の祭りの日に「サン・ミゲル」から「サン・ディエゴ」に町の名前を変更しました。米墨戦争の結果、メキシコからアメリカに割譲され、1850年にアメリカ合衆国カリフォルニア州となり、2月18日にカリフォルニア州の最初の27郡の一つとして始まりました。

San Diego is 190km south of Los Angeles and immediately adjacent to the border with Mexico. With an estimated population of 1.4 million San Diego is the eighth-largest city in the U.S. The city is known for its mild year-round climate, natural deep-water harbor, extensive beaches, long association with the U.S. Navy, and recent emergence as a healthcare and biotechnology development center. San Diego has been called “the birthplace of California”. Historically home to the Kumeyaay people, it was the first site visited by Europeans on what is now the West Coast of the U.S.
