バグダードは、メソポタミア平原のほぼ中央、ティグリス川中流の河畔に位置し、画像にも蛇行するチグリス川が見えています。バグダードの市街地は、蛇行するティグリス川の両岸に広がっています。また、バグダードは、イラクの経済・交通・文化の中心であり、イラク工業の大半が集中しています。伝統的工業としてじゅうたんや絹織物、また綿製品・皮革製品・たばこ・アラック酒などがあり、セメントや鉄道修理、食品加工、繊維などの近代工業も盛んです。

Baghdad is the capital of Iraq and the second-largest city in the Arab world. Located along the Tigris River, the city was founded in the 8th century and became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. Within a short time of its inception, Baghdad evolved into a significant cultural, commercial, and intellectual center of the Muslim world. In contemporary times, the city has often faced severe infrastructural damage, most recently due to 2003 invasion of Iraq, and the subsequent Iraq War that lasted until December 2011. The war had resulted in a substantial loss of cultural heritage and historical artifacts as well.
