リオデジャネイロは人口は600万人を擁するメガシティで、サンパウロに次ぐブラジル第2位の都市です。都市周辺の美しい文化的景観は「リオデジャネイロ:山と海との間のカリオカの景観群」として、2012年に世界遺産リストに登録されました。リオはカーニバル（ポルトガル語でカルナヴァル（Carnaval））で有名です。カトリックの謝肉祭のことで、カーニバル自体は世界各国のカトリック文化圏で行われている他、ブラジル各地でも行われています。また、リオは2016年の第31回夏季オリンピックの開催都市です。

Astronaut Sergey Ryazansky captured from ISS Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Rio de Janeiro is the second-most populous municipality in Brazil. Part of the city has been designated as a World Heritage Site, named “Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes between the Mountain and the Sea”, by UNESCO in 2012 as a Cultural Landscape. In addition to the beaches, some of the most famous landmarks include the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado mountain, named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Rio de Janeiro is famous for the Carnaval, an annual celebration in the Roman Catholic tradition that allows merry-making and red meat consumption before the more sober 40 days of Lent penance which culminates with Holy or Passion Week and Easter. Rio was also the host of the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 2016 Summer Paralympics.
