コスタリカは自然が豊かで、1847年の独立当初は国土の95%が密林に覆われていました。現在の森林面積は国土の40%以下となっていますが、地球上すべての生物種のうち5%が生息すると言われ、「環境保護先進国」として名高いです。国立公園・自然保護区の総面積は全国土の1/4を超えます。チリやウルグアイと共にラテンアメリカで最も長い民主主義の伝統を持つ国であり、中央アメリカでは例外的に政治的に安定が続き、かつ経済状態も良好な「中米の楽園」と呼ばれるほどの国家でしたが、1990年代以降は麻薬の横行により治安の悪化と社会の不安定化が進行しています。

Costa Rica is known for its long-standing and stable democracy, and for its highly educated workforce, most of whom speak English. Since its independence in 1847, Costa Rica has remained among the most stable, prosperous, and progressive nations in Latin America. Following the brief Costa Rican Civil War, it permanently abolished its army in 1949, becoming one of only a few sovereign nations without a standing army. The country has consistently performed favorably in the Human Development Index (HDI), placing 63rd in the world as of 2017, among the highest of any Latin American nation.
