[Earthview Wonders] No.98: Volcanoes of the South Sandwich Islands

NASA’s Aqua satellite captured on Sept. 29 a trio of plumes shows volcanic activity in the South Sandwich Islands located in the South Atlantic Ocean. This image is of false color (color allocations different from the real pattern in order to make the movement of specific targets comprehensible) and actual landscape is not so light greenish.

Gas plume was observed from the volcano of nearby Bristol Island in May 2016, and the last activity was recorded in 1956, 60 years ago. The volcanic activities have been continuing.

South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands (SGSSI) is a British overseas territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean, approximately 1,000km east of the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) offshore of Argentina. It used to be the extraction base for blubber oil or whale oil.
