モントリオールはトロントに次ぎ人口・経済規模で第二の都市で、セントローレンス川沿いに位置しています。住民の大半がフランス系カナダ人を中心にしたヨーロッパ系ですが、市内の人口の31.7%は非白人と世界各地からの移民も多い多民族都市です。モントリオール大都市圏の住民の7割弱が第一言語をフランス語とし、フランス文化の薫り高い異国的な雰囲気、美食の町、石造りの住宅街、街中にある数多くの教会、石畳のヨーロッパ調の旧市街の街並みなどから観光客向けに「北米のパリ」と宣伝されます。一方で、19世紀の終わりから20世紀の始めにかけて英国系移民によって街が発展してきたことからヴィクトリア朝の建物が多いなど英国文化も色濃く残り、北米文化と混合している側面も持ちます。

Montreal is the second-most populous municipality in Canada after Toronto. The city covers most of the Island of Montreal at the confluence of the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers. The port of Montreal lies at one end of the Saint Lawrence Seaway, the river gateway that stretches from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic. French is the city’s official language and is the language spoken at home by 49.8% of the population of the city, followed by English at 22.8% and 18.3% other languages.
