[:ja]トマ・ペスケ宇宙飛行士がISSから撮影した中東の砂嵐です。
砂嵐は、塵や砂が強風により激しく吹き上げられ、空高くに舞い上がる気象現象で、空中の砂塵により見通しが著しく低下します。砂漠などの乾燥地域において発生します。吹き上げられている土壌粒子の粒径（1/16mmを基準とする）によって、”duststorm”や”sandstorm”と定義されますが、粒径の小さい軽い粒子の場合、上空数千mの高さまで舞い上がり、時には砂の壁を形成するほどに発達することがあります。

A dust storm, also called a sandstorm, is a meteorological phenomenon common in arid and semi-arid regions. Dust storms arise when a gust front or other strong wind blows loose sand and dirt from a dry surface. Fine particles are transported by saltation and suspension, a process that moves soil from one place and deposits it in another. Drylands around North Africa and the Arabian peninsula are the main terrestrial sources of airborne dust.
