Normandy is a geographical and cultural region in northwestern Europe, roughly coextensive with the historical Duchy of Normandy. Normandy comprises mainland Normandy (a part of France) and insular Normandy (mostly the British Channel Islands). The inhabitants of Normandy are known as Normans; the region is the historic homeland of the Norman language. During World War II, the Allies (Britain, the U.S., Canada and Free France) coordinated a massive build-up of troops and supplies to support a large-scale invasion of Normandy in the D-Day landings on June 6 1944 under the code name Operation Overlord.

The local scenery on the ground is as follows.
