[Earthview Wonders] No.180: Lake Victoria

Astronaut Takuya Onishi captured Lake Victoria, the largest African lake (68,800km2) divided among Kenya🇰🇪, Uganda🇺🇬 and Tanzania🇹🇿. The lake occupies a shallow depression with an average depth of 40m.

According to CNN’s article, Lake Victoria is said to be the “world’s most dangerous lake” with annual 5,000 deaths. Lying on the Equator, Lake Victoria has higher temperature with erratic weather conditions, and poor communications hinder fishermen from expecting bad weather.

Further, the introduction of Nile perch in 1950s, the carnivorous exotic fish, swept indigenous hervivorous species in the lake, and resulted in the imminent destruction of the ecosystem. As a result, local economy based on the fishery had davastating outcome.

The scenery of the lake on the ground is as follows.
