ポリネシアのいくつかの諸島からなる南太平洋のフランスの海外共同体です。ソシエテ諸島のタヒチ島は、リゾート地として最も有名な島で、フランス領ポリネシアの中心地です。タヒチ島は1791年頃よりポリネシア系のポマレ王朝によって支配されてきましたが、1842年に女王ポマレ4世がフランスの圧力に屈し、タヒチ島とモーレア島をフランスの保護領とする条約に署名。1880年のポマレ5世の主権譲渡への署名によりタヒチ島はフランスの植民地となり、以降、フランスは本格的にタヒチ島に進出していきました。フランス領ポリネシアは世界最大の黒蝶真珠の輸出国で、世界の90%以上のマーケットシェアを誇っています。

French Polynesia is an South Pacific overseas collectivity of France and is composed of 118 geographically dispersed islands and atolls among which 67 are inhabited. Tahiti, which is located within the Society Islands, is the most populous island, having close to 69% of the population of French Polynesia as of 2017. Since France declared a protectorate over these islands in the 1800’s, French Polynesia developed with the strong support and influence of France. The famous black Tahitian pearls which accounted for about 55% of exports in value.
