[:ja]地球観測衛星Aqua、Terra、Suomi NPPなどのデータを元に、NASAが気候予測モデルGEOS FPから算出した地球のエアロゾルの分布図です。赤色は黒色炭素（いわゆる煤）、紫色は砂埃、水色は海水塩を表しています。
地球創世から今日に至るまで、大気中にはさまざまな粒子状物質が存在してきており、これらは自然現象や生命の営みの中で重要な役割を果たしてきたと考えられています。特に産業革命以後は、生産、労働、生活環境の粉塵や煙に関する人工的な粒子状物質が我々の関心を引くようになりました。近年の研究で明らかになってきたのが、黒色炭素（煤）の気候に与える影響で、CO2以外の温室効果ガスで影響力の高い順に見ていくと、メタンガスが27％、黒色炭素が12％とされています。微粒子の大きさは10nmから1mm程度まで様々です。

NASA visualized the aerosol distribution of this planet based on the data of satellites such as Aqua, Terra, Suomi NPP, etc. In the visualization, the storms are visible within giant swirls of sea salt aerosol (blue), black carbon particles (red) are among the particles emitted by fires, vehicles and factories, and dust (purple) are eminent especially in the desert area.
An aerosol is a suspension of fine solid particles or liquid droplets, in air or another gas, and they can be found in the air over oceans, deserts, mountains, forests, ice, and every ecosystem in between. The size particles vary from 10nm to 1mm.
