1682年、クエーカー教徒のウィリアム・ペンが同志とアメリカに渡来、この地に居住区を建設したのが市の起源です。156万人を擁する全米第5位の都市で、名門のペンシルベニア大学や工学系に強いドレクセル大学、日本にもキャンパスを置く州立大学のテンプル大学を抱える学術都市です。

In 1682, William Penn, an English Quaker, founded the city to serve as capital of the Pennsylvania Colony. Today Philadelphia is the sixth-most populous city in the United States.
