[:ja]ボリビアというとチチカカ湖が有名ですが、同国第2位のポオポ湖が干上がったとNASAのTerra衛星が伝えました。地元の貴重な漁獲資源だったために、地域への影響が懸念されています。ポオポ湖の面積は1,000km2、日本最大の琵琶湖の面積が670km2ですから、日本で言えば、琵琶湖以上の湖が干上がると考えると驚きます。
通常、12~3月の雨季にポオポ湖の水量が増えるのですが、もともと同湖は深さ3m足らずですので、今年は干ばつが続き、湖が干上がってしまいました。同湖は1994年にも干上がったことがあり、その時は数年かかって水域を回復しました。

NASA’s Terra satellite image revealed Bolivia’s second largest Lake Poopo is dried up. The lake was the important fishing source for local community, and serious impact for the area is concerned.
Water level rises during rainy season of December to March, but this year heavy drought dried up the lake. Lake Poopo drying up took place in 1994 and it took several years to recover the water level.
